Niger Delta Power Holding Company Moves Forward with Alaoji Plant Rehabilitation
Jennifer Adigije, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), has unveiled plans to rehabilitate the 450 MW Alaoji open cycle power plant located in Abia State. This initiative follows the plant’s shutdown earlier this year, prompted by disputes over gas supply and metering.
Emmanuel Ojolu, Head of Corporate Communications and External Relations at NDPHC, provided these updates in a statement released in Abuja. During a meeting with Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Ms. Adigije outlined the company’s strategies to restore the power plant to operational status.
Ojolu elaborated on the reasons behind the shutdown, highlighting a mismatch between metering and trading points, a cessation of gas supply from Total Energy, and the accumulation of debts as significant challenges faced by the facility.
Upon assuming office in 2024, Adigije prioritized the restoration of the Alaoji plant. She emphasized that all necessary repairs to the faulty gas line have been successfully completed. Furthermore, past debts to Total Energy have been cleared, allowing for the resumption of gas supplies to the plant.
In addition to the gas line repairs, extensive electromechanical upgrades are now finished. The refurbishment of three generating units—GT1, GT22, and GT23—has enhanced the plant’s output, enabling it to feed approximately 375 MW into the national grid. The infrastructure for transmitting power is robust, and the plant is well-positioned to supply electricity seamlessly.
Adigije also acknowledged the Abia government for its initiatives in reforming the power sector, notably the establishment of the Aba ring-fenced power layout and the creation of a State Electricity Regulatory Authority. She indicated that the NDPHC is eager to engage with states and eligible customers to enhance power delivery across Nigeria, leveraging the provisions of the Electricity Act.
Governor Otti Highlights Economic Impact of Power Restoration
Governor Otti expressed appreciation for NDPHC’s efforts in revitalizing the Alaoji plant, deeming it essential for the state’s economic advancement and industrial growth. “The last time I visited the Alaoji facility, it was disheartening to see its potential going untapped. I am thrilled to learn of its revival,” he stated.
The governor noted that with adequate funding, the plant could eventually expand its capacity from 800 MW to around 1,100 MW. He underscored the critical role of electricity as a driving force for economic development and reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing electricity infrastructure since taking office in 2023.
Otti also indicated that the state government has made progress with the Umuahia power market, having secured an agreement with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to acquire electrical distribution assets for Umuahia and its neighboring areas. He further mentioned that approximately 100 MW would be necessary to efficiently power the eight local government areas within the Umuahia ring fence. Plans for investments in renewable energy and mini-grid projects are also in progress.
In a collaborative effort, Otti tasked the State Electricity Commissioner with liaising with NDPHC officials to strategize on how to effectively transmit power from the Alaoji plant to Umuahia and other regions in the state.
Continued Collaboration and Commitment to Power Supply
Governor Otti assured the NDPHC management of unwavering support from the state government and encouraged the company to persevere amidst the various challenges plaguing the power sector. During a company tour, Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Works, Mr. Ikechukwu, reaffirmed the state’s willingness to partner with NDPHC in its endeavors.
Emenogu Uzoma, Acting Chief Operating Officer of Alaoji Power Plant, also reported that the facility is primed for full operational capacity. The concerted efforts of both the NDPHC and the Abia government signify a promising future for energy supply in the region, underscoring the importance of this rehabilitation initiative.
