South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on Nigerians and other foreign residents to adhere to the country’s laws, customs, and traditions. His statement, delivered during a broadcast on SABC News on Freedom Day, comes amid rising anti-foreigner tensions in various regions of South Africa.

In his address, President Ramaphosa implored those who are legally residing in South Africa to show respect towards South Africans and their customs. “Please respect us as South Africans, respect our laws, respect our customs and traditions, just as you would want us to respect the laws and traditions of our own country,” he urged.
Commitment to Immigration Laws and Global Cooperation
The President reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to international cooperation and human rights, while also underscoring the importance of enforcing immigration laws. He encouraged the public to have faith in legal processes concerning illegal immigration, stating, “Yes, let the law take its course.”

Ramaphosa highlighted the vital role of international law in sustaining global order, noting its origins in the aftermath of devastating conflicts. “International law is a shield for all countries of the world, regardless of their size or influence,” he said, stressing that true multilateralism relies on respect for diversity while upholding core principles such as sovereignty and peaceful coexistence.

Reacting to a viral video that purportedly showed foreign nationals being targeted, Ajayi clarified that the individuals depicted did not represent the broader South African community. He emphasized that they were merely acting on external influence, urging Nigerians to remain cautious but not to panic.

In light of escalating tensions, the Commission for Nigerians in Diaspora has issued safety advisories, urging Nigerian nationals to abide by local laws and avoid confrontations. They cautioned against engagement with demonstration groups and have advised monitoring safety updates from local media.

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg continues to function while collaborating with South African authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens. Additionally, the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, is in discussions with her South African counterpart regarding these issues, aiming to enhance security measures for foreign residents.
