Former US President Donald Trump has predicted that Sir Keir Starmer will “resign” as Prime Minister, citing “disastrous failures” in handling immigration and energy issues.
Trump’s remarks come amidst escalating speculation regarding Starmer’s future following Andy Burnham’s recent success in a by-election.
“Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the UK. He has messed up on critical issues: immigration and energy (open North Sea oil!). We wish him all the best! President DJT,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social last Sunday.
While Trump’s comments seem to draw from media speculation, it’s important to note that there hasn’t been any direct communication between the parties over the weekend.
Besides targeting Starmer, Trump also criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, suggesting she is underperforming despite her popularity and failing to support U.S. efforts concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
In response, Meloni took to Instagram to describe Trump’s accusations as “senseless,” urging him to focus on his own political standing rather than hers.
As rumors about Starmer’s resignation circulate, British Business Secretary Peter Kyle remarked on Sunday that the Labour leader is contemplating the “political realities” ahead. Kyle has not been in touch with Starmer since Friday but emphasized that any notions of imminent resignation lack credibility.
Sources suggest that Starmer is preparing to hand over leadership to Burnham by September, allowing for a strategic transition intended to bolster Starmer’s legacy. This potential change in leadership could reshape the Labour Party’s direction going forward.
