Inauguration of DNA Forensic and Investigation Center
Enugu State Governor Peter Mba has declared that criminals have nowhere to hide as his administration ramps up efforts to proactively track and apprehend offenders. His comments came during the launch of the Center for DNA Forensic and Criminal Investigation (CeDFoCI), a collaborative initiative between the Enugu State Government, Godfrey Okoye University, and the Nigeria Center for DNA Learning, held on Wednesday at the university’s complex in Nike.
Governor Lauds Security Reforms
During the ceremony, Mba highlighted the vital role that advanced forensic capabilities will play in enhancing national security. He praised President Bola Tinubu for his visionary policies, which have facilitated increased funding for infrastructural development and improved security measures in Nigeria. Mba specifically mentioned the recent introduction of the State Police Bill, recognizing it as a progressive move towards enabling states to manage their own police forces more effectively.
Collaboration with Educational Institutions
The partnership with Godfrey Okoye University underscores Mba’s commitment to integrating educational institutions into efforts to tackle societal challenges. Professor Christian Anike, Vice-Chancellor of the university, commended the governor for advancing security measures that will have lasting benefits for the justice system. Mba emphasized that improved safety conditions will attract investors and innovators to Enugu State, fostering an environment conducive to business growth.
Enhancing Crime Investigation Capabilities
The CeDFoCI represents a significant investment in the state’s security architecture, as Mba noted that previous shortcomings in investigative resources allowed many crimes to remain unsolved. He stated, “Every crime scene leaves a trail we can now track and use as evidence.” With this center, law enforcement agencies will possess world-class forensic technologies that significantly improve their ability to investigate crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
Reinforcing Public Trust in Law Enforcement
Attorney General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, remarked on how the establishment of CeDFoCI positions Enugu and Nigeria as leaders in integrating forensic science into their security frameworks. He emphasized that modern investigative demands necessitate sophisticated tools, which this center will provide, thus enabling law enforcement to deliver reliable scientific evidence and enhancing judicial processes.
IGP Highlights New Opportunities for Police
Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu described the center as a pivotal opportunity for the Nigeria Police Force to enhance their investigative techniques concerning serious crimes such as murder, kidnapping, and human trafficking. He noted that this initiative would not only strengthen public confidence in the justice system but also offer law enforcement personnel invaluable training and development opportunities.
Commitment to Scientific Integrity in Justice
Professor George Youde, the Founding Director of the DNA Learning Center, elaborated on the importance of conducting criminal investigations based on scientific truth and reliable forensic findings. The center aims to cultivate a culture where justice is anchored in evidence, eradicating reliance on speculation. Bishop Callistus Onaga, representing the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, reinforced the idea that nation-building is a collective responsibility, urging collaboration between governmental and societal stakeholders to achieve justice and security.
