Virginia Republican Faces Backlash Over Racial Comments
WASHINGTON — Representative Jen Quiggans, a vulnerable Republican from Virginia, is facing significant criticism after she appeared to agree with a radio host’s remark suggesting that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the highest-ranking Black member of Congress, should “take the cotton pickers out of Virginia.”
Following the controversial exchange, Quiggans stated that she did not condone the language used, asserting that the host “should not have used that word.”
However, the remarks have drawn widespread condemnation from Democrats, who have called for a formal apology from Quiggans. The second most powerful House Democrat has even called for her resignation, highlighting the serious ramifications of her comments.
The incident occurred during an interview on Richmond Morning News with radio host Rich Herrera, where the two discussed the upcoming midterm elections and Democratic redistricting initiatives in Virginia. Herrera suggested that if Jeffries wanted to engage in Virginia’s political landscape, he should consider relocating from New York to run for Congress.
Herrera’s inflammatory remark led Quiggans to respond in agreement, stating, “That’s right. Same. Yes, that’s right.” This response has amplified scrutiny over her views, given the historical implications of the language used.
Quiggans later clarified on X that her agreement was not an endorsement of the racially charged phrasing, but rather a critique of Jeffries’ involvement in Virginia politics. “A radio host should not have used that word, and I did not condone it,” she said, emphasizing that her comments were misconstrued.
The radio clip gained traction online after being shared by the American Bridge, a liberal opposition research group, stirring further outrage. Quiggans, a former Navy helicopter pilot who served in Iraq and Kosovo, is facing a challenging reelection for her Virginia Beach seat, where she is expected to square off against former Representative Elaine Luria, a retired Navy commander who lost to Quiggans in 2022.
In a strong rebuttal, Luria condemned Quiggans’ remarks, stating that they reflect a troubling acceptance of racist rhetoric from an elected official. “The racist comments that Jen Quiggans proudly endorsed today are disgusting,” she asserted. “I know what this racist dog whistle means.”
Democratic leaders have echoed this sentiment, criticizing Quiggans for aligning her views with efforts to undermine voting rights and reduce Black representation in Congress. Representative Catherine Clark, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, has called for Quiggans to step down, citing a “failure of judgment and leadership” from a self-identified moderate.
Christy Stevenson, spokesperson for Jeffries, characterized Quiggans’ comments as reflecting a dangerous attitude towards racial equality, arguing that such language undermines the progress toward fostering a multiracial democracy in the United States. “Jen Quiggans doesn’t care about our country’s progress,” she stated, calling attention to the broader implications of such rhetoric in today’s political environment.
