Security Measures Announced Ahead of Eid el-Kabir 2026
As Eid el-Kabir 2026 approaches, state governments and security agencies have rolled out extensive measures to ensure public safety during the festivities. These actions come in response to ongoing security challenges and heightened vigilance regarding potential attacks during this period.
Restrictions Imposed in Borno State
In Borno State, officials have declared temporary restrictions on the movement of vehicles and pedestrians to facilitate peaceful Eid prayers. Governor Babagana Zulum approved these measures, which will be effective from 6 AM to 11 AM on Wednesday, encompassing all vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles. This decision followed a security advisory from the Nigerian military, which warned of potential terrorist activities in crowded locations across the nation.
Focused Efforts to Enhance Security
Professor Usman Taal, the Borno State Commissioner for Intelligence and Internal Security, emphasized that the restrictions aim to bolster security protocols during Eid celebrations. He advised residents to attend prayer venues close to their homes for effective movement and easier identification. However, essential services such as security personnel, ambulances, and other emergency response teams will be exempt from these restrictions, provided they carry valid identification.
Massive Security Deployments Across the Nation
Meanwhile, security agencies nationwide have ramped up personnel deployments. In Kwara State, the Police Command, through spokesperson Adetun Ejire Adeyemi, reported that extensive security measures are in place to ensure peaceful festivities. They have ordered strategic deployments at places of worship, recreational areas, highways, and other vulnerable sites to maintain order before, during, and after the celebrations.
Intensified Security Operations in the Federal Capital Territory
In the Federal Capital Territory, police have deployed explosive ordnance disposal teams to prayer centers and public spaces. As stated by Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Ade, operations involve collaboration with multiple security agencies, including the military and civil defense corps, under a joint operation dubbed “Operation FCT.” Continuous patrols and coordinated efforts aim to prevent crime and swiftly respond to any incidents.
Readiness and Coordination in Jigawa and Delta States
The Police Command in Jigawa State has activated all operational assets to guarantee a smooth festival period, with personnel deployed across various public spaces. Similarly, the Delta State Police Command has detailed officers, including tactical teams and crime units, to ensure safety during the celebrations. Both commands are working closely with other security agencies to gather intelligence and proactively address potential security threats.
NSCDC Mobilizes Personnel Nationwide for Eid Celebrations
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) has also mobilized over 56,000 personnel across the country to safeguard lives and national infrastructure during Eid el-Kabir. According to National Public Relations Officer Babawale Afolabi, these efforts include operational vehicles and specialized tactical squads on high alert for rapid response. Furthermore, the NSCDC has issued a warning against any disruptions to public peace, stating that offenders will face arrests and legal action.
Enhanced Security Oversight in Lagos
In Lagos, the NSCDC has deployed 2,150 personnel to protect vital assets and prevent vandalism during the festive period. Spokesperson Oluwaseun Abolurin detailed that officers are stationed in critical areas, including religious sites and parks. Lagos State Commandant Mr. Adedotun Keshinro has urged law enforcement to adhere to professional standards and respect citizens’ rights throughout the celebrations.
