Community Support Initiatives in Bayelsa State
Olusegun Samuel reports from Yenagoa, where Rotary District 9141 has extended crucial assistance to residents of the Gbaranturu community in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. This initiative provided free medical services, food, and clothing to many of the area’s underprivileged and vulnerable residents.
Hundreds of community members, including the elderly, women, youth, and children, gathered at the local community center to benefit from the Rotary’s Food, Medicine, and Clothing (FMC) program. This outreach aimed to deliver essential health services, diagnostics, medications, and much-needed clothing, reflecting Rotary’s commitment to community welfare.
Chinedu Ikegwani, the immediate past district governor of Rotary District 9141, shared insights about the program with journalists at the event. He emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader effort by the district to uplift vulnerable populations in rural areas and aims to reach over 300 community members. This aligns seamlessly with Rotary International’s mission to make a positive impact on lives and communities.
Ikegwani highlighted, “Rotary’s greatest service is giving, and its philosophy revolves around changing lives by reaching as many people as possible.” He pointed out the pressing social issues facing the country since 2004, asserting that the situation remains dire, which necessitated this outreach program to assist those who need it most.
Dr. Nshikato Ntia, a senior Rotarian in charge of the medical components of the initiative, noted that the program provides essential medical services—including testing and treatment—for individuals of all ages, from children to the elderly. He explained that clothing donations involved collecting gently used items from households, which were then cleaned and prepared for distribution to those in need.
With plans in place to assist 300 individuals from various age groups, the focus on rural areas underscores the significant need for support in these communities. Ifeoma Wabara, assistant governor of Rotary District 9141, reiterated that societal contribution is a core Rotary value. She expressed that the joy and gratitude of those receiving food, medical aid, and clothing provide immense fulfillment to the volunteers involved.
Beneficiaries such as Queen Shadrack and Mr. Ebiowei Samuel voiced their appreciation for the support received. They also called for increased collaboration between the government and organizations like Rotary to confront the ongoing challenges faced by rural areas, emphasizing the need for sustained assistance for the vulnerable populations.
