Sahara Group Foundation Expands Recycling Initiative in Northern Nigeria
The Sahara Group Foundation has taken significant steps to enhance its waste monetization program in northern Nigeria by inaugurating two new recycling centers this week. These facilities aim to address the pressing issue of waste management in areas that currently lack organized collection systems.
New Recycling Facilities Established
On July 14, a new hub was launched at Gidan Hakimi in the Shuwarin Local Government Area of Jigawa State, followed by the opening of another center at Asharami Retail Station in Badiko, Kaduna South Local Government Area on July 15. With these additions, the foundation’s network now comprises 22 locations nationwide and marks the establishment of its second and third sites in the northern region.
Community-Centric Approach to Waste Management
The Jigawa facility was developed in collaboration with the Shwarin King Council, while the Kaduna site was established in partnership with Asharami Synergy, a sister company of the Sahara Group. Chidirim Menakaya, Director of the Sahara Group Foundation, emphasized that this expansion mirrors a strategic commitment to engage local partners in community development. By collaborating with organizations familiar with local needs, the foundation aspires to create a sustainable recycling ecosystem that residents can actively manage and benefit from in the long run.
Dignitaries Attend Opening Ceremonies
The ceremonies in both locations attracted various local officials. In Jigawa, attendees included Dr. Nura I. Doka, Secretary of Environment, and Hon. Abdulhamid Ibrahim Barago, the Shuwarin Local Government Chairman, alongside members of the King’s Council. Similarly, Asharami Synergy’s leadership joined station staff and local residents at the Kaduna opening.
A Long-Term Solution for Waste Disposal
Alhaji Bashir Abdullahi, Sarkin Gabas and Hakimin Shwarin, highlighted the importance of the new hub, framing it as a response to years of inadequate waste disposal solutions, which often led to burning or roadside dumping. He noted that the hub will empower local youth and women, enabling them to earn income from recyclable materials that previously contributed to environmental pollution.
Strategic Location Benefits in Kaduna
At the Kaduna recycling center, station manager Aliyu Abdullahi Mabai expressed enthusiasm about the hub’s placement, citing the convenience it offers to customers and the surrounding community. He reiterated that this initiative aligns with Asharami Synergy’s commitment to responsible business practices.
Impact of Sahara Go Recycling Program
Operating under the banner of Sahara Go Recycling, these new hubs form part of the broader Sahara Beyond XXX sustainability program. This innovative model compensates households and waste collectors for recyclable materials, aiming to formalize an activity that has long been informal or lacking in many areas. The foundation revealed plans to establish a new base in Kano State in the coming weeks following discussions with Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who showed interest in the program.
Since its inception, Sahara Go Recycling has successfully processed over 1,000 tonnes of recyclable materials and has positively impacted more than 2,000 lives across its operational sites. This expansion not only addresses immediate waste management needs but also fosters long-term sustainability and economic opportunities within local communities.
