Governor Endorses Deputy as APC Gubernatorial Candidate in Lagos
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially backed Deputy Governor Obafemi Kadri Hamzat as the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate for the upcoming elections, a move that precedes the party’s primaries. This endorsement comes at a time when no other candidates have expressed a desire to contest for the position.
This marks a historic moment as it is the first time since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999 that a sitting governor has endorsed their deputy for succession. The development underlines a commitment to continuity in leadership, reflecting the strong partnership between Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat, who have collaborated effectively over the past seven and a half years.
Sanwo-Olu’s support follows a series of consultations by Hamzat, including meetings with key political figures such as Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, former Finance Minister Olawale Edun, and Senator Tokunbo Abiru of Lagos East. Hamzat also consulted with influential leaders, including Alhaji Tajudeen Orsi, Chairman of the Governors Advisory Council, which culminated in a pivotal meeting with Sanwo-Olu that hinted at a larger plan for the APC primaries.
Emphasizing the significance of their partnership, Sanwo-Olu welcomed Hamzat and members of the Governors Advisory Council following an Executive Council meeting at the Marina State House. Here, both leaders shared reflections on their shared political journey, having initially crossed paths during their service under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
Sanwo-Olu reminisced about their history, noting how he and Hamzat aligned on key ministerial decisions in former Governor Babatunde Fashola’s cabinet. He acknowledged the longevity of their connection, stating, “From day one, I sought a capable partner to help build a Greater Lagos.” He further highlighted Hamzat’s qualifications, citing his intelligence and ability to contribute significantly to state governance.
In an emotional recount, Hamzat expressed gratitude for the nurturing partnership he has experienced with Sanwo-Olu. He shared how their relationship flourished since his appointment in 2005, asserting that he has never felt like a mere placeholder in the administration. “The governor has embraced me as a true partner in this journey,” Hamzat remarked, emphasizing Lagos’s vital role in Nigeria’s economy and stability.
Both leaders firmly believe in the importance of sustaining Lagos’s development trajectory. Hamzat pledged loyalty to his party and the people of Lagos, asserting, “We must be proactive in safeguarding our city’s progressive path,” a sentiment supported by Sanwo-Olu’s steadfast commitment to addressing the city’s growing challenges.
As discussions continued, both Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat received unanimous support from their colleagues for Hamzat’s gubernatorial ambitions, signaling a unified front as they approach the impending elections.
