Senate Majority Leader John Thune publicly endorsed Cassidy, describing him as an effective senator for Louisiana. “Our job is to do everything we can to support the incumbent,” Thune stated, while also recognizing that the ultimate decision lies with Louisiana voters.
Donald Trump’s Endorsement of Letlow
Just prior to the primary, Trump expressed his support for Letlow on Truth Social, refraining from direct criticism of Cassidy—unlike earlier campaign messages. Trump praised Letlow as a tested leader and a dedicated public servant, further galvanizing her campaign.
Declining Support for Impeachment Republicans
The number of Republicans who supported Trump’s impeachment remains limited, and that group has continued to shrink in Congress. Of the ten House Republicans and seven Senate Republicans who voted for impeachment in 2021, only three have successfully won re-election, mainly due to the all-party primaries that allowed them to attract a broader voter base.
Impacts of State Primary Changes
In a strategic move to support Letlow, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry enacted legislation altering the state’s primary system from a “jungle” format to traditional party-specific primaries. Additionally, he postponed House primaries to permit lawmakers to redraw congressional maps after the Supreme Court invalidated existing district boundaries. However, the Senate primary has remained on its original timeline.
Cassidy’s Concerns Over Voter Confusion
Cassidy expressed worries that the new primary structure makes it challenging for independent voters to support him. He reported receiving complaints from constituents who had difficulty voting in the current system, describing it as “terribly confusing.” Cassidy’s campaign manager, Kate Larkin, echoed these sentiments, accusing the governor of manipulating the electoral process to favor Letlow.
