Successful Completion of Digital Literacy Training in Edo State
Over 150 women and girls in Edo State have completed a six-day digital literacy program designed to equip participants with essential technology skills, enhancing career prospects and supporting business growth in the digital economy.
Collaborative Effort to Empower Women
This initiative, organized by She Code Africa in collaboration with HP and backed by the Edo State Information and Communication Technology Agency, along with the Girl Leads Project, attracted participants from diverse backgrounds and age groups. The program focused on developing critical digital and workplace skills.
Commitment to Digital Empowerment
At the closing ceremony, Oreoluwa Adetula, Program Manager at She Code Africa, reiterated the organization’s dedication to empowering women and girls across Africa. The program aims to provide them with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in an increasingly digital landscape.
Beginner-Friendly Curriculum
Adetula emphasized that the curriculum is designed to be accessible and practical, allowing participants to transition from basic computer tasks to more sophisticated productivity and communication tools. “The goal is to meet women where they are and equip them with indispensable skills for today’s digital workplace,” she noted.
Comprehensive Digital Training Offered
Training covered a broad spectrum of critical skills, including Google Workspace, Microsoft Office applications, Excel, Google Sheets, Google Slides, internet safety, Google Meet, and effective digital communication and calendar management. The program is tailored for individuals at various life stages, from students preparing for future employment to entrepreneurs looking to leverage digital tools to grow their businesses.
Widespread Demand for Digital Literacy
Deborah Ukpala, an operations associate at She Code Africa, remarked on the program’s appeal, revealing that although it primarily targeted women aged 16 to 35, many older participants also joined. This engagement underscores the rising demand for digital literacy among women from all demographics.
Positive Participant Feedback and Transformative Experiences
Participants expressed enthusiasm about the program’s impact on their digital confidence and knowledge. Ugwee Evelyn described her experience as exceeding expectations, revealing that she learned much more than just presentation skills. Likewise, Ukana Augusta praised the lessons on internet safety and information management, highlighting their practical significance.
Advocacy for Continued Support in Digital Skills Training
Organizers highlighted that this initiative aligns with She Code Africa’s broader mission to cultivate a robust pipeline of women prepared for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The program advocates for continued support from organizations, development partners, and stakeholders to bridge the digital skills gap and expand technology education opportunities for women and girls throughout the community.
