Grassroots Mobilization in Sokoto: Youths Fundraise for Incumbent Lawmaker
In a notable instance of grassroots political engagement, young residents of the Yarbo and Shagari local government areas raised N10 million to secure nomination forms for Umar Yusuf Yarbo, a sitting member of the House of Representatives. This financial commitment aims to encourage him to pursue a second term in the 2027 elections.
The fundraising event, organized by Malam Maliki, was held in Yabo Town, the administrative center of the Yabo Shagari Federal Constituency. The gathering attracted numerous young participants from both councils, expressing their desire for effective representation in the “green chamber” of parliament.
Maliki explained that the funds will be allocated for purchasing expressions of interest and nomination forms from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He emphasized that this initiative was a direct result of what he regarded as significant representation by young leaders since Mr. Yarbo took office.
According to Maliki, the funds will play a vital role in enhancing legislative quality. He stated, “The realized funds will be used to purchase ADC expressions of interest and nomination forms for MPs to provide quality representation in the Green Chamber.”
The coordinator noted that their support stemmed not only from Mr. Yarbo’s proven contributions to the constituency but also from his dedication to integrity and remarkable success in attracting federal projects to both Yabo and Shagari.
In his remarks, Maliki described Yarbo as more than just a lawmaker, calling him a “bridge builder” and a “symbol of hope” in the political landscape, illustrating the personal connection many feel toward their representative.
The youth gathered not only to donate funds but also to formally endorse Yarbo for a second term, expressing satisfaction with his performance and the continuity they hope to maintain in representation.
Support from Local Leaders
Hon. Bashir Golau, representing the Goronyo/Gada Federal Constituency, commended the actions of the youths, highlighting the strong impact Mr. Yarbo has had on his constituency. “Young people must have been impressed by Mr. Umar’s achievements in the federal constituency,” Golau remarked, recognizing the significance of grassroots support.
During the event, Umar Yusuf Yarbo expressed gratitude for the youth’s generosity. He assured the attendees that if re-elected, he would draw inspiration from their support to further serve the people of Yabo and Shagari.
Yarbo encouraged young individuals to remain law-abiding and unite in their political efforts, especially in backing the African Democratic Congress during the upcoming elections in 2027. In a broader political critique, he also voiced concerns about the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at both federal and state levels, suggesting their governance failures have opened doors for alternative parties like the ADC.
This fundraiser and endorsement marks an early surge of political activity in Sokoto as the 2027 elections approach. Analysts suggest that such grassroots movements not only reflect robust local support but also alleviate the financial pressures faced by incumbents seeking re-election.
The N10 million raised symbolizes both a financial contribution and a political affirmation from the youth of Yabo and Shagari, who are eager to elect representatives that resonate with their interests in Abuja.
