Anambra Governor Declares State of Emergency Over Environmental Crisis
Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, has declared a state of emergency in response to rampant sand mining and the indiscriminate obstruction of waterways that pose significant threats to the environment. This announcement was made during a recent meeting with the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers, as reported by Christian Aburime, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary.
Immediate Actions Ordered to Address Environmental Issues
In light of the environmental challenges, Governor Soludo has mandated the prompt de-silting of drainage systems across the state and called for an end to unauthorized sand mining activities. He emphasized that ongoing blockage of waterways, coupled with uncontrolled sand extraction, heightens Anambra’s vulnerability to flooding and gorge erosion.
Environmental Situation Described as Existential Threat
The governor has characterized the current environmental circumstances as an existential crisis, warning that Anambra has reached a critical ecological tipping point. Despite being Nigeria’s second smallest state by land area, Anambra continues to suffer significant land loss due to severe environmental degradation.
Ecological Degradation Linked to Human Activities
Governor Soludo pointed out that human activities are exacerbating the region’s ecological issues. He highlighted the concerning practice of channeling residential wastewater directly into roadways, along with the indiscriminate disposal of waste into drainage systems and unregulated sand mining as primary contributors to erosion and flooding. He called for collective responsibility in preserving the environment.

The governor also addressed reforms in governance and community management, taking into account recent Supreme Court rulings on autonomous communities within the state. He outlined plans to enhance community governance by formally incorporating local communities into the state’s administrative framework, thereby addressing tensions surrounding town unions.
