South African Startup Launches Innovative Language Model in AI Market
A South African artificial intelligence startup has introduced a large-scale language model that significantly enhances information processing capabilities, marking a bold entry into the dynamic generative AI space.
Refiant AI has unveiled Protea, a long-context language model named after South Africa’s national flower. According to CEO and co-founder Viroshan Naicker, Protea features a remarkable 10 million token context window, which is about ten times the working memory capacity of existing models like ChatGPT and Claude.
Naicker explained in a recent interview with CNBC Africa that the primary advantage of this innovation does not lie in asserting superior intelligence, but rather in enabling companies to handle substantial volumes of documents, code, and data more efficiently in a single session.
He elaborated, “LLMs can be thought of as having working memory. A ten million token context allows us to store ten times more documents, code, and data, enabling LLM reasoning over such extensive datasets.” This capability is particularly relevant for industries inundated with real-time, unstructured information. For instance, in the insurance sector, organizations constantly evaluate significant volumes of claims, identifying potentially fraudulent activities.
In practical terms, Naicker noted that long-context models can prioritize incoming complaints and highlight anomalies, streamlining the review process for human assessors. The broader vision for Refiant is to assist companies in converting massive stores of unstructured data into structured outputs, which are far easier to navigate.
Naicker likened smaller context AI systems to users with limited short-term memory. He argued that a larger context window mitigates the risk of overlooking relevant details when processing multiple streams of information simultaneously. This focus on context size positions Refiant in a less competitive segment of the AI landscape, where instead of vying directly with established AI labs on raw intelligence, it emphasizes practical business applications.
The company’s advancements are attributed to breakthroughs in compression technology aimed at reducing both memory and computing requirements. Initially focused on minimizing the footprint of language models due to growing concerns over AI’s energy consumption, Refiant later recognized that efficiencies gained in one area could be redirected to enhance capabilities in another, specifically context size.
Naicker stated, “We were intrigued by how language models could operate in a smaller space. Our findings demonstrate that compression is effective, and if we can compress certain aspects, we can also scale others.” Notably, this methodology enables the operation of a 10 million token context window without necessitating a supercomputer, a notion many in the industry believed was unattainable.

Naicker emphasized that enterprise-scale AI implementations often face constraints due to infrastructure costs. This announcement trails a $5 million seed funding round finalized on February 10, underscoring the startup’s rapid progress since its inception only four months ago, with the rollout of Protea representing an essential early milestone.

Despite perceptions of lagging behind in comparison to the US, Europe, and China, Naicker believes South Africa possesses the research talent and entrepreneurial spirit necessary for competitive success. He asserted that tangible execution, rather than public perception, will ultimately govern how the market evaluates African tech ventures.
