Senator Jibrin Supports National Police Force Initiative
Senator Balau I. Jibrin, Vice President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Constitutional Review Committee, has characterized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposal for a national police force as a significant operation aimed at tackling insecurity decisively within Nigeria.
Bold Reforms for National Security
In a recent appearance on Radio Nigeria Kaduna’s live Hausa-language program, Hannu da Yawa, Senator Barau asserted that the initiative represents a strategic reform effort to reinforce Nigeria’s security framework. This initiative aims not only to improve law enforcement but also to enhance community safety across the country.
Extensive Legislative Scrutiny
Senator Barau provided insights into the rigorous legislative process behind the proposal, which has included extensive public hearings across six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This comprehensive approach ensured that the proposal underwent thorough examination before reaching its current stage.
Safeguards Against Misuse of Power
Addressing concerns regarding potential misuse of state police powers, Senator Jibrin underscored the numerous safeguards incorporated into the proposal. He highlighted that these protections are designed to prevent any abuse of authority while maintaining the integrity of law enforcement agencies.
Collaboration with Key Stakeholders
Senator Barau elaborated on the collaborative nature of this Executive Bill, emphasizing the involvement of various stakeholders, including the President, the National Assembly, police experts, and civil society organizations. He conveyed that this measure responds to longstanding demands for a constitutional amendment allowing state police services throughout the Commonwealth.
Complementing Existing Law Enforcement
Clarifying the role of state police, Senator Barau noted that this initiative will not replace the Nigeria Police Force but will serve to complement it. By recruiting locally, state police officers will have a better understanding of their communities, which is expected to enhance response times to crimes such as robbery and kidnapping.
Addressing Operational Concerns
Responding to inquiries about operational capacity and funding for the state police, Senator Barau assured Nigerians that a robust financial framework would be developed. As the constitutional amendment progresses, he expressed optimism that the state House of Assembly would support these reforms, framing them as essential steps toward achieving lasting peace and security in Nigeria.
