Police have identified the suspect as Abdul B., a 21-year-old known to be a radicalized member of an Islamist group in Berlin. A photo of him has been released as authorities continue their efforts to locate him.
Government Officials Respond to the Attack
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the event as an Islamist attack during a press briefing on Sunday. He disclosed that Abdul B. is a German citizen of Lebanese descent with a history of criminal behavior.
Security Concerns Raised in Germany
Dobrindt pointed out that the attack occurred outside the festival’s secure area, noting that many of those affected were arriving or departing from the event. He warned that further terrorist attacks could not be dismissed, leading to an elevated threat level in Germany.
Political Condemnation of the Violence
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the incident as a “heinous act,” emphasizing that the attack undermines the values of kindness and tolerance integral to society. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed her condolences, highlighting the importance of safety and freedom for all individuals, especially during celebratory events like Pride.
Immediate Aftermath and Public Safety Measures
A white vehicle, believed to have been used in the attack, was pictured inside the police cordon, having crashed into a tree. The suspect is approximately 1.9 meters (6 feet 3) tall, of thin build, with black hair. Authorities have advised the public to avoid any direct contact with him, as he may be armed and dangerous. Following the attack, all Pride celebrations were canceled, disrupting one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ gatherings.
