Tems and Michelle Obama Engage Young Artists at the Obama Presidential Center
Grammy Award-winning Afrobeats artist Temirad Opunyi, known as Tems, recently met with former First Lady Michelle Obama at the newly inaugurated Media Suite within the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. This event brought together aspiring young artists to discuss themes of confidence, creativity, and self-expression.
Shared via a video on X, the meeting took place during activities hosted at the center’s Creative Hub in Jackson Park. Officially opened shortly before the June 18-21, 2026, launch event, the media suite aims to equip young people with essential tools for music production, podcasting, and various forms of creative training.
In a post accompanying the video, Michelle Obama expressed her hope that the Media Suite will serve as a nurturing environment where youth can discover their voices and explore their artistic capabilities. “Barack and I hope this Media Suite will be a place where young people can find their voices, learn about music, and create beautiful art,” she wrote.
During the session, Tems expressed her appreciation for the chance to interact with the participants, highlighting the significance of authenticity in an artist’s journey. “I had the opportunity to meet some beautiful and talented women, and I’m so grateful to the Obama Center and Michelle Obama for inviting me,” she noted.
In response to a student’s inquiry about gaining confidence on stage, Michelle Obama underscored that confidence grows through consistent practice and experience. Tems also encouraged young artists to maintain their individuality and creative authenticity, stating, “You have to bring out more of yourself, be more authentic to yourself, and that gives you confidence.” She further explained her motivation in starting the Leading Vibe initiative, aimed at supporting young women in the music industry.
Michelle Obama elaborated on the center’s mission, emphasizing that it was designed as a venue for young individuals to explore their talents and voice. She reaffirmed her and Barack Obama’s vision of establishing it as a lasting creative hub for future generations.
Following this enlightening encounter, Tems took to X to share her emotional response, expressing gratitude for the experience. “I am so inspired by Mrs. Obama and the great work she does. Thank you for inviting me to such a truly wonderful and moving experience,” she said.
The Obama Presidential Center, a project of former President Barack Obama and the Obama Foundation, recently held an impressive opening ceremony featuring performances by renowned artists such as Stevie Wonder, Tems, Bruce Springsteen, and John Legend, marking a significant milestone in its mission to foster creativity and community engagement.
