YouTuber Transitions to Filmmaking with Impressive Debut
Currie Barker, a 26-year-old filmmaker originally from YouTube, has made a remarkable entry into the horror genre with his film, Obsession, crafted over just 20 days and produced on a budget of $750,000.
Box Office Success Exceeds Expectations
Now in its second weekend at the box office, the Focus Features-distributed film is projected to gross over 100 times its budget, with an anticipated global total of $79.7 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo. This figure includes an impressive $58.5 million from theaters in North America. Focus Features operates under Comcast, the parent company of NBC News.
Industry Praise for Record-Breaking Performance
Even Jason Blum, a prominent figure in the horror film industry and executive producer of Obsession, acknowledged the film’s extraordinary achievement. According to Blum, the film is the only wide-release horror title on record to generate such significant earnings in its second week, with $22.4 million—a 30% increase from its opening.
Following in the Footsteps of Internet Success Stories
Obsession is not Barker’s only project to defy industry standards. Earlier this year, Mark Fischbach, known online as Markiplier, achieved box office success with his self-funded indie video game adaptation, Iron Lung, which reinvigorated interest in indie films created by online personalities. Similarly, 20-year-old YouTuber Cain Parsons is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated A24 film, Backrooms.
A Fairytale Journey into Hollywood
For Barker, the successful launch of Obsession signifies a significant milestone in his captivating journey through Hollywood. Up until the September 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Barker was primarily recognized for his YouTube content, which included projects like “Milk and Cereal,” a thriller centered around pranking duo.
Major Opportunity Following Festival Premiere
Following the premiere of Obsession at TIFF, the film attracted immediate attention, leading to a bidding war before Focus Features ultimately secured it for $15 million. Barker reflected on his initial doubts prior to the film’s release, admitting he didn’t anticipate the level of success it would achieve: “As the leader of the ship, I had to rally the team, but I genuinely had no idea what would happen.”
Appeal of Obsession Resonates with Audiences
Starring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, Obsession explores the theme of caution regarding one’s desires, weaving romance and horror into its narrative. The film has received critical acclaim, boasting a 95% rating on the Tomatometer and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, signifying strong support from both critics and viewers alike.
Shifting Perceptions of YouTubers in Hollywood
Discussing the increasing presence of YouTubers in Hollywood, Barker noted an evolving recognition among filmmakers and producers concerning the platform’s potential for discovering new talent. He remarked, “It’s encouraging to see the industry becoming more receptive to showcasing content on YouTube, moving away from the outdated notion that it’s a last resort.”
Future Projects Highlighting Barker’s Growing Influence
Barker’s rise in the film industry has been met with confidence from Hollywood executives. He has another project, Anything But Ghosts, in development, and A24 has recently enlisted him for a reimagining of the iconic Texas Chainsaw Massacre. “The opportunities ahead of me are incredible, but I remain focused on what truly matters,” he stated.
