Accusations Against Government Policies
Prince Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the upcoming 2027 general elections, has leveled serious accusations against President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He claims that the government uses poverty and economic hardship as tools to suppress public dissent and weaken societal demands for accountability.
Link Between Policy Failures and Public Discontent
In a recent interview, Adebayo asserted that the widespread suffering experienced by many Nigerians is not a mere coincidence but a direct consequence of policy and governance failures attributed to the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration. He argued that countless Nigerians are so consumed with the struggle for survival that they have lost sight of their rights and entitlements as citizens.
Man-Made Poverty and Dependence on Government
Adebayo emphasized the notion that the poverty plaguing Nigeria is largely a man-made issue, one that is facilitated by the government’s actions and exacerbated by public complacency. He criticized the administration for perpetuating a system that fosters dependency on political patronage rather than empowering citizens through quality education and economic opportunities.
Challenges in Citizen Engagement
The SDP leader pointed out that desperation makes it challenging for citizens to question authority or demand their constitutional rights from elected officials. “My opponent is not Tinubu; my enemy is the ignorance of the people,” Adebayo stated, expressing the need for a more informed citizenry that understands governmental duties and their own rights.
Failure to Uphold Constitutional Responsibilities
Adebayo further alleged that Tinubu’s government has failed to uphold the principles of governance as outlined in Chapter II of the Constitution. He posited that effective management of public resources, in alignment with constitutional mandates, could have significantly reduced current levels of poverty, unemployment, and social unrest.
Erosion of the Education System
The SDP candidate highlighted the alarming rise in the number of school-age children who are either out of school or receiving subpar education. He noted that many children are seen on the streets, peddling goods or begging for alms, while those attending school often receive minimal, if any, valuable education. This alarming trend reflects a significant neglect of the government’s foundational responsibilities.
Political Manipulation and the Culture of Dependency
Adebayo cautioned that a poorly educated populace is more vulnerable to political manipulation, making it less likely for them to hold leaders accountable. He criticized the APC government for distracting citizens from pressing issues like security, unemployment, and economic distress, fostering an environment where short-term political gifts are prioritized over the demand for sustainable governance.
Call for Political Enlightenment and Civic Engagement
According to Adebayo, the key to transformative political change lies in enhancing political awareness and civic education among Nigerians. He contended that once citizens grasp the significance of their rights and roles, they will shift their focus from accepting meager handouts to demanding effective governance. He argued that opposition parties and reform-minded leaders must not only aim to defeat President Tinubu but also awaken public consciousness regarding constitutional rights and responsibilities.
