Tinubu Backs Oyebunji’s Re-election Ahead of Ekiti Governorship Polls
In a significant political display, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu spearheaded a coalition of influential leaders, including 18 state governors, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, senators, ministers, and crucial stakeholders, to endorse the re-election of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebunji as the Ekiti State governorship election approaches this Saturday.
This endorsement took place during a large rally organized by the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Ekitiparapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti. The venue was filled with thousands of party members and supporters, indicating Governor Oyebunji’s rising popularity and acceptance beyond the party lines.
President Tinubu, through Vice President Kassim Shettima, praised Governor Oyebunji for his preparedness in governance and unwavering commitment to a people-centered leadership approach. He expressed that Oyebunji’s humility and inclusive governance style have helped win the hearts of residents, justifying his candidacy for another term.
According to the President, Governor Oyebunji exemplifies what leadership should represent—service, respect for institutions, and a dedication to the welfare of the citizenry. Tinubu stated that Oyebunji has engaged everyone in his governance, from farmers to traditional rulers, and has remained focused on delivering the dividends of democracy.
Calling on voters in Ekiti to turn out in mass numbers on election day, Tinubu expressed confidence that Oyebunji would build upon the successes of his first term. In a symbolic gesture, he passed on the governorship to former party leaders and governors present, encouraging them to work towards a significant victory for the APC.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio reiterated the call for Oyebunji’s re-election, describing him as a humble and people-oriented leader whose achievements have gained national recognition. He urged residents of Ekiti to actively support the governor at the polls.
Highlighting Oyebunji’s contributions, Senator Uba Sani, the Chairman of the APC National Movement Council and Governor of Kaduna State, noted his impact in education, worker welfare, infrastructure, transportation, and human capital development. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the support for Oyebunji reflects both his acceptance and his commendable performance during his time in office.
Prof. Nentawe Yurwatoda, the APC National Chairman, characterized the governor’s accomplishments as the campaign’s greatest asset and expressed optimism that the electorate would reward him with another term.
In response, Governor Oyebunji emphasized that he is seeking re-election based on his previous service record and the trust bestowed upon him by the people. He assured residents that a second term would usher in accelerated development and increased investment in vital sectors, while also calling for peace throughout the electoral process.
The rally featured the notable presence of former Governor Ayodele Fayose, a significant figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who reaffirmed his support for Oyebunji, attributing it to the latter’s unifying leadership style that fosters collaboration among political leaders across various parties. Fayose encouraged Oyebunji to maintain this spirit of unity, expressing confidence in his ability to achieve a historic victory in the upcoming election.
This rally attracted a diverse array of political figures, including governors, federal lawmakers, ministers, former governors, and traditional leaders from across Nigeria, underscoring the strategic importance of the Ekiti governorship election and the broad coalition backing Oyebunji’s bid for reelection.
