President Tinubu Welcomes Airbus Proposal for Nigeria’s Aerospace Development
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed enthusiasm over a proposal from global aircraft manufacturer Airbus to establish a maintenance and hangar facility in Nigeria. This initiative is part of broader efforts to position Nigeria as a regional hub for aerospace and aviation services.
Urgent Need for Modern Aircraft in Nigeria
During discussions, President Tinubu emphasized the critical requirement for modern helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. These assets are essential for bolstering security operations, enhancing logistics, and addressing national development priorities, all aimed at tackling enduring security challenges faced by the nation.
Discussions Held at the Africa CEO Forum
The President made these remarks on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum held in Kigali, Rwanda. He met with an Airbus delegation led by Thierry Courtet, the head of business growth for Africa and the Middle East, to explore collaborative opportunities between Nigeria and Airbus.
Call for Timely Delivery of Apache Helicopters
Tinubu reiterated the urgency of acquiring three Apache helicopters that Nigeria has previously ordered to support ongoing security and counter-terrorism operations. He underscored his administration’s commitment to deploying all necessary resources to combat terrorism effectively.
Exploring Comprehensive Aviation Cooperation
Discussions also covered Nigeria’s acquisition of the Airbus C-295 platform and the potential for broader defense aviation cooperation. This includes aircraft leasing and financing options designed to improve access to aircraft for airlines while easing financial constraints within the sector.
Proposal for an Aviation Leasing Company
Furthermore, President Tinubu spoke with the Airbus delegation about establishing an aviation leasing company. This initiative aims to unlock value along Nigeria’s aviation value chain and enhance financing access for national carriers, thereby strengthening the existing partnership with Airbus.
Airbus Supports Nigeria’s Long-Term Aerospace Goals
Thierry Courtet commended President Tinubu for his economic reforms and efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s aviation sector. He reaffirmed Airbus’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s long-term aerospace development objectives, proposing a “360-degree engagement” model. This comprehensive approach encompasses civil aviation, military cooperation, human capital development, sustainability initiatives, and the establishment of operational hubs and maintenance infrastructure.
A Collaborative Vision for the Future
In addition to these initiatives, the proposal includes collaboration in satellite technology and Earth observation, further emphasizing a strategic partnership aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s aviation landscape.
