Tinubu Encourages Nigerian Athletes Ahead of Commonwealth Games
President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian athletes set to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, to embody courage, honor, integrity, discipline, and patriotism. He emphasized the importance of making the nation proud through excellence achieved in fair competition.
Speaking during a presidential send-off ceremony at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, expressed confidence in the athletes’ abilities to shine on the world stage.
Tinubu portrayed the athletes as exemplary ambassadors, highlighting Nigeria’s resilience, talent, and determination. He reassured them that their extensive training and sacrifices have prepared them for this pivotal moment. “Go to Glasgow with confidence, discipline, and unity,” he advised, reinforcing the notion that Nigeria is capable of competing against the best.
Reflecting on past experiences, the President cautioned the athletes against repeating mistakes from previous events, particularly noting the challenges faced in Birmingham. He stressed that adherence to values and integrity is crucial, stating that the glory of victory only holds significance when achieved through discipline and respect for the rules.
Emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship, he said, “I want every medal you earn to represent not just your talent and hard work but also the values that define our great nation.” Tinubu reiterated that winning is essential, but doing so with integrity is paramount. He charged the athletes to compete not only courageously but also as a unified team, reflecting the fighting spirit of Nigeria.
The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the sports sector through robust investments in athletes and strict adherence to the relevant regulations. He highlighted recent steps taken to improve Nigeria’s anti-doping measures, including the implementation of the Nigeria Anti-Doping Act, which aims to establish a stronger legal and institutional framework for clean sports in the country.
During the ceremony, Tinubu inaugurated the Board of Directors of the Nigeria Anti-Doping Center, reinforcing the government’s dedication to clean sport and the protection of athletes. He proclaimed that Nigeria is determined to build a sports ecosystem where victories are achieved with dignity and respect.
Assuring the athletes of comprehensive government support, Tinubu expressed optimism about the Nigerian team surpassing its previous best performance at the Commonwealth Games. He implored them to maintain focus under pressure, respect their competitors, and proudly represent Nigeria throughout the tournament.
Leading the delegation was Malam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), who extended gratitude to Tinubu for the supportive environment created for sports. He remarked on the significant attention and policy direction given to sports since the President took office, highlighting how these efforts aim to utilize sports as a catalyst for youth development, economic growth, and national unity.
In a show of industry support, the NSC later announced a partnership with global sportswear giant PUMA as Team Nigeria’s official kit provider for the games. This partnership marks a significant step in efforts to enhance the profile of Nigerian sports and underscore its commitment to supporting elite athletes.
The Nigerian delegation, comprising 74 members, will compete in 10 different sports at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Officials are optimistic that the athletes will bring home a record number of medals while upholding the values of discipline, fairness, and excellence.
