Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Nine Young People from Sokoto State
A devastating road accident has resulted in the deaths of nine youths from the Yabo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The victims were en route to Lagos in search of better economic prospects when the tragedy occurred.
The incident, which took place on Friday evening, has plunged the Yabo community into mourning, with heartfelt condolences flooding in from across the state for the loss of these promising young lives.
Umar Yusuf Dammajeh Yabo, the Member of Parliament representing the Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency, expressed his profound sorrow following the incident. He described it as an enormous loss not just for the families involved, but also for the constituency and the nation at large.
In a statement released to the press in Sokoto, Dammaje conveyed his heartbreak upon learning of the accident. He emphasized the tragic impact of losing nine youths who dared to pursue a better life for themselves and their families.
“This tragic event is a monumental loss not only for the families affected, but also for our constituency, Sokoto State, and the nation as a whole,” Dammaje stated. “These were ambitious young individuals determined to build a brighter future, and their untimely demise while seeking legitimate livelihood is deeply saddening.”
Highlighting the broader implications of this tragedy, the lawmaker reflected on the challenging economic circumstances many Nigerian youths face, which often compel them to travel long distances in search of employment.
“The entire region is grieving the loss of a generation of hardworking youth. Their deaths are not just a personal tragedy; they signify a significant loss of potential to society,” he noted. Dammaje lamented that this incident serves as a harsh reminder of the challenges faced by many young Nigerians today.
He extended his condolences to the bereaved families, traditional leaders, and the residents of Yabo Local Government Area. In his message, he prayed for eternal peace for the souls lost, and offered strength and patience to their grieving families.
Dammaje also urged relevant authorities, particularly road safety agencies, to intensify their efforts in preventing fatal accidents on Nigeria’s highways. “We must enhance our road safety measures to avert avoidable tragedies that continue to take innocent lives. Every year, countless families are affected by such heartbreaking incidents,” he asserted.
In addition, he called on government officials at all levels to increase investments in youth empowerment, skills acquisition programs, and job creation initiatives. “By expanding employment opportunities within communities, we can alleviate the necessity for young individuals to embark on perilous journeys in search of work,” he explained.
The tragic loss of these nine youths has reignited discussions surrounding youth unemployment, internal migration, and road safety issues in the region. Many in Yabo are considering this incident as one of the darkest moments witnessed in recent years.
A senior official from the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kebbi State, who requested anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak on the matter, confirmed that the accident occurred outside their jurisdiction. According to reports, the incident took place near Kainji, Niger State.
“We were notified of the situation after the bodies had already been buried,” the official disclosed, adding to the sense of urgency surrounding the community’s mourning.
