The U.S. women’s national soccer team has reunited its forward trio, self-styled as the “Triple Espresso”—Trinity Rodman, Sophia Wilson, and Mallory Swanson—who practiced together this week for the first time since the 2024 Olympics. This training session precedes their upcoming matches against Brazil, a rare set of away games for the team.
This connection became evident during the 18-minute call, which was filled with laughter and emotional moments as the players finished each other’s sentences. The last time they donned the USWNT jersey together was on August 10, 2024, when they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Brazil, clinching the program’s fifth Olympic gold medal, with Swanson scoring the decisive goal in that match.
During 2025, both Swanson and Wilson took maternity leave, welcoming their children in September and November, respectively. Meanwhile, Rodman faced her own challenges, recovering from various injuries.
Preparations Intensify for Upcoming Matches
Swanson has recently rejoined her club team, the Chicago Stars, but USWNT head coach Emma Hayes emphasized the importance of the forward’s presence at training camp to re-establish connections with teammates. The makeup of the squad has evolved significantly since the Olympics.
Wilson and Rodman resumed their roles with the USWNT earlier this year. With Swanson set to play against Brazil on Saturday, this match will mark her first international appearance in 604 days. “It was tough today—it was only the second day, but I was excited to see everyone again and to get back into the flow,” Swanson remarked.
The trio significantly contributed to the national team’s success at the 2024 Olympics, collectively accounting for 10 of the team’s 12 goals. This self-proclaimed “Triple Espresso” moniker originated during their time in France, echoing the legacy of the formidable USWNT front line from the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 1991.
Coach Hayes reiterated that preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in November and the following summer’s tournament cannot afford to waste any time. Creating synergy among this dynamic attacking trio remains a priority. “We’ve developed depth, but these three have a proven track record. They were essential to our gold medal win, and it’s vital that we rebuild those connections,” she stated.
In a poignant moment, Swanson and Wilson opted not to take their young children to Brazil due to the long travel distance. “Mal and I have spent every moment with our babies over the past several months, so being away is certainly challenging,” Wilson explained. As emotions ran high during the conversation, Rodman lightheartedly offered, “I’ll be your baby,” prompting laughter to ease the mood.
The USWNT is set to face Brazil on Saturday in São Paulo, followed by another matchup on Tuesday in Fortaleza, both cities preparing to host the 2027 World Cup. The last encounter between these teams occurred in spring 2025, resulting in a victory for the United States in the first match, where Rodman netted an early goal after returning from injury. The U.S. faced a setback in the rematch, losing to a more experimental Brazilian squad.
