Military Thwarted Attack on 27th Brigade Headquarters
In the early hours of May 8, 2026, the military successfully repelled an attack aimed at the headquarters of the 27th Brigade and the Bunigali checkpoint. Authorities have characterized the military’s counteroffensive as “devastating,” effectively neutralizing the threats posed by the attackers.
Coordinated Assault by Terrorists
Sani Uba, head of media and information for Operation HADIN KAI, reported that the terrorists launched a coordinated assault from multiple vantage points around 2 a.m., taking advantage of darkness to overwhelm and encircle the stationed forces. The initial attack originated from the west and was later reinforced from the south via Ganinga Junction, followed by advances from the southwest corridor.
Effective Military Response
Despite the onslaught, the military maintained its defensive posture and mounted a robust counterattack, deploying heavy firepower and executing tactical maneuvers that decimated the number of attackers. The rebels were forced to retreat as military forces effectively neutralized their advances.
Utilization of Advanced Combat Tactics
Military officials reported that troops used indirect fire systems along with offensive-defensive combat strategies to systematically dismantle the militants’ onslaught from all directions. According to their statement, the integrity of the military camp was preserved throughout the encounter, with no breach reported.
Casualties and Recovered Assets
Preliminary assessments revealed that 10 terrorist bodies were recovered near the military installation, while intelligence later indicated that over 20 additional bodies were discovered hidden in nearby foliage along the escape routes through Gashua, Azare, and Kamya. Furthermore, Nigerian Air Force capabilities played a critical role during the operation, conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions that enhanced real-time tracking and engagement of fleeing insurgents.
Seizure of Weapons and Ongoing Pursuit
Following the skirmish, military forces recovered a substantial cache of weapons and ammunition left behind by the fleeing rebels. The inventory included eight AK-47 rifles, two general-purpose machine guns, two rocket-propelled grenade launchers, as well as various types of ammunition and improvised explosive devices. These recovered items highlight the scale and intensity of the attackers’ failed operation.

While the mission was largely successful, two soldiers lost their lives during the confrontation.
