Trump Administration Considers Suspension of International Flights Amid Immigration Protests
The Trump administration is contemplating the suspension of international flights in several major cities across the United States as a reaction to mounting protests over immigration enforcement policies.
Plans for Immigration Processing Adjustments in Sanctuary Cities
In a recent interview with Fox News, Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wayne Mullin revealed that the administration is “developing a plan” to respond to several days of unrest at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in New Jersey. The administration aims to withdraw immigration processing services from cities deemed “sanctuary cities,” where local laws limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
Protests Highlight Conditions at Newark ICE Facility
Mullin’s comments came during a demonstration where Democratic lawmakers voiced their concerns regarding the conditions at Newark’s Delaney Hall ICE facility. They also questioned the continuation of federal immigration services at Newark Liberty International Airport. “If it were ours, we would handle it, but it’s the city’s. And they’re barricading our employees from going in and out of the facility,” he stated, emphasizing the challenges faced by federal agents.
Federal Agencies Coordinating Immigration Enforcement
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), both of which are integral parts of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), work alongside ICE to manage airport security and immigration services.
Strikes and Clashes Heighten Tensions
For the past five days, hundreds of detainees at the privately operated Delaney Hall ICE Detention Center in Newark have participated in a hunger strike and labor strike, calling for improved conditions, access to medical care, and progress on their immigration cases. The situation escalated dramatically on Tuesday night, with violent clashes reported between immigration authorities and protesters, resulting in the use of pepper spray and Tasers.
Political Backlash and Accusations of Slander
The ongoing strike and the clashes outside the detention center have intensified the already strained relationship between the Trump administration and Democratic politicians opposed to the facility’s operations. Notably, U.S. Sen. Andy Kim was reportedly pepper-sprayed by ICE agents during the protests. Mullin accused Kim and others of “spreading slander” about ICE, characterizing their actions as political stunts aimed at garnering attention.
Implications of Sanctuary Policies on Federal Operations
In an interview, Mullin suggested that if sanctuary cities continue to restrict federal enforcement efforts, they should reconsider allowing international flights into their airports. “If they’re not going to let us go out and arrest the ‘worst of the worst,’ why do we have international flights coming into the airport there?” he queried, adding that if such cities hinder federal law enforcement, international flights should be reconsidered.
Continued Strikes and Health Concerns for Detainees
The hunger strike at the Delaney Hall facility persisted through Wednesday, attracting the attention of New York State Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat, who entered the facility for observation. Following his visit, Espaillat noted, “The environment and food situation are terrible. We feel they have no access to health care. We feel they are overcrowded and denied basic rights.” He affirmed his commitment to advocating for the closure of the facility.
