PDP Leader Asserts Resilience Amid Leadership Crisis
Chuks Okocha reports from Abuja that Kabiru Turaki, chairman of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed confidence that the opposition will navigate its current leadership challenges, drawing on lessons from past crises.
During a recent stakeholder meeting in Abuja, Turaki emphasized that the current turmoil is comparable to previous disputes, particularly those that resulted in the formation of an interim committee under Ahmed Makarfi’s leadership. He reflected on the party’s ability to withstand adversity over the years.
Turaki stated, “We’ve weathered good times as well as challenges in the past. What we are experiencing now is not unprecedented.” He recalled moments when attempts were made to seize control of the party, yet the PDP united to establish a governing committee, demonstrating its inherent resilience.
The meeting served to inform party leaders about recent developments, including the implications of court rulings affecting the Board of Directors. On July 17, a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a lawsuit aimed at compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize an Interim National Working Committee, spearheaded by Turaki.
The PDP is currently divided into two factions, one of which enjoys the backing of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and has gained recognition from electoral bodies. Turaki alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has played a significant role in inciting discord among opposition parties nationwide.
“It’s disheartening to recognize that the roots of these conflicts often trace back to the ruling party,” Turaki criticized, asserting that the PDP remains steadfast in its commitment to participate in the upcoming 2027 elections, regardless of internal dissent.
“No one can extinguish the PDP. Despite leadership challenges, we will survive,” he affirmed, highlighting the essential role of political parties in securing power through legitimate means. He assured that the PDP would be on the ballot in all facets of the 2027 elections, from presidential contests to state assemblies.
Party Figures Advocate for Unity and Loyalty
Former Niger State Governor and PDP Board of Trustees Secretary, Babangida Aliyu, also addressed attendees, urging party members to remain patient and united in the face of current challenges, which he believes will ultimately fortify the party.
He criticized political figures who frequently switch allegiances for personal gain, underscoring the significance of loyalty and endurance within the party structure. “It’s in times of adversity that we discover our true strength,” he remarked.
Tony Ajigbemi, Chairman of the PDP State Chairman Forum, weighed in by highlighting the lessons learned from previous missteps, particularly in backing individuals who later opposed the party’s ideals. Ajigbemi asserted that such betrayals undermine the system that initially afforded these individuals political opportunities.
He contended that former PDP members who have benefited from the party’s support yet now disparage it are guilty of undermining its core values. “Such actions demonstrate a lack of appreciation for the foundations that granted them political office,” Ajigbemi concluded.
