Moscow Under Drone Assault as Ukraine Intensifies Operations
More than 60 drones targeted Moscow overnight, according to an announcement from the city’s mayor on Tuesday. This attack is part of a significant increase in Ukraine’s long-range weapon operations aimed at the Russian capital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated via social media that a satellite communications center was struck, which allegedly played a critical role in the reconnaissance and coordination of Russian military efforts in Ukraine.
Massive Attack Reported by Authorities
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin characterized the incident as a “massive attack” but did not specify its origin. He noted that air defense forces managed to “destroy 61 drones approaching Moscow.”
Emergency Services Respond to Drone Crashes
Emergency services quickly mobilized to address incidents related to the drone strikes, although no casualties were reported in Moscow. However, the broader coordinated attack across Russia had more severe implications. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its air defense systems intercepted 419 Ukrainian drones across various regions, including the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
Regional Impact and Casualties
In the Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported tragic outcomes, including the death of a 6-month-old child and injuries to three others due to a drone crash that ignited a house fire in Egorievsk, located approximately 160 miles southeast of Moscow. Additionally, Vorobyov noted that debris from the drone had damaged an administrative building in Dubna, roughly 110 kilometers north of the city.
Air Travel Disruption and Strategic Targets
Russia’s Federal Aviation Agency, Rosavyatsiya, confirmed that operations at Moscow’s Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports were temporarily disrupted due to the attacks. President Zelenskiy reiterated that the Dubna satellite communications center was targeted for its strategic role in facilitating Russian military operations in Ukraine. He indicated that further attacks are imminent against other enemy facilities.
Retaliatory Measures and Escalating Tensions
These recent attacks follow a significant assault targeting a major oil refinery in the Moscow region less than two weeks ago. Kiev has framed its military operations as retaliation for a Russian missile strike on a historic monastery complex in the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian officials assert that the new wave of drone strikes reflects an expanding capacity to reach crucial targets deep within Russia, which increases pressure on Moscow to consider ending the ongoing conflict.
Fuel Shortages and Military Strategy
The targeting of Russian oil and energy infrastructure has led to notable disruptions in the country’s military supply chains. President Vladimir Putin acknowledged on Monday the onset of a fuel shortage for the first time during the conflict. In a state television interview, Putin revealed that Ukraine had suggested a mutual halt to long-range attacks as a potential pathway to peace, a proposal that Russia dismissed while affirming its resolve to continue military actions.
