UNODC Reports Shift in Nigeria’s Role in Global Drug Trafficking
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has indicated that Nigeria is increasingly losing its appeal as a hub for international drug cartels, largely due to intensified enforcement measures by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Increased Enforcement Sends Strong Message to Criminal Networks
During a recent handover of a newly equipped interview room to the NDLEA in Abuja, UNODC Country Representative Sheikh Usman Toure emphasized that recent arrests, seizures, and convictions signal a significant shift in Nigeria’s landscape concerning drug trafficking. He noted that these developments serve as a stern warning to criminal organizations.
Nigeria’s Changing Narrative in Drug Trafficking
Toure remarked that while Nigeria has historically been a crucial transit point for drug trafficking networks, this narrative is evolving. He stated that the substantial crackdown in recent years sends a definitive message: Nigeria is becoming an increasingly challenging environment for such operations.
Praises for NDLEA Leadership and Achievements
Highlighting the accomplishments of NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), Toure praised the agency’s bold and professional approach. He acknowledged the enhancements in enforcement strategies, notable drug seizures, and the expansion of prevention and treatment programs since 2021.
International Support Highlights Commitment to Justice
Toure also commended the U.S. government’s financial backing of the initiative through the International Narcotics Enforcement Agency (US-INL). He pointed out that this support extends beyond mere infrastructure, reflecting a broader commitment to justice, transparency, and the establishment of safer communities. He advocated for the replication of such equipment across Nigeria to bolster the fight against organized crime.
NDLEA Chairman Emphasizes Digital Transformation
In his remarks, NDLEA Chairman Marwa described the donation as timely and integral to the agency’s digital transformation efforts. He stated, “We are not just opening new rooms to the public; we are enhancing the credibility of the investigative process.” Marwa underscored the importance of incorporating technology and upholding the rule of law in order to align with global best practices.
