Valentine Delon Triumphs at Women’s Amateur Championship
Valentine Delon secured her position in four of the next five major tournaments with a stunning 3&1 victory over Andrea Revuelta in the Women’s Amateur Championship final held at Muirfield. This achievement marks Delon as the first French player to claim the title since CĂ©line Boutier in 2015, joining the ranks of future Solheim Cup stars like Leona Maguire, Georgia Hall, and Anna Nordqvist.
The 21-year-old athlete established a two-hole lead during the middle stages of Saturday’s intense 36-hole final. Despite facing multiple comebacks from her Spanish rival, she maintained her composure and clinched victory on the 35th hole.
Delon’s win not only highlights her talent but also earns her an invitation to participate in next month’s Amundi Evian Championship and the AIG Women’s Open, both of which will be broadcast on Sky Sports. Additionally, she has secured spots for next year’s Chevron Championship and the US Women’s Open, along with an opportunity to compete in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Provided she remains an amateur, she will also participate in the LPGA Tour’s Standard Portland Classic and events within the Ladies European Tour this August.
Revuelta’s Resilience in the Final
In a closely contested match, Revuelta initially struggled, falling behind after just three holes amidst windy conditions. However, she rebounded with consecutive birdies, bringing the match back to parity by the turn. As the stakes heightened, Revuelta continued to showcase her skill, closing the gap on the 16th hole.
Despite falling two down again, Revuelta’s impressive bunker shot helped her halve the next hole, and an exceptional chip on the 18th allowed Delon to secure that hole with a par. Delon ultimately won on the 19th hole, yet her lead evaporated as Revuelta made a strong comeback, winning subsequent holes to again tie the match.
Ultimately, Delon regained control, building a three-hole lead once more and finishing strong with pars on the last two holes to secure her victory. Reflecting on her achievement, Delon expressed immense joy, stating that achieving this victory is difficult to fully grasp yet represents the culmination of her hard work and dedication to the sport.
Statistical Highlights of the Championship
Throughout the final, Delon showed remarkable poise and focus, stating, “I tried not to leave any spaces in the score. Every time she came back, I just tried to focus on the next hole.” This mindset allowed her to fend off Revuelta’s advances without ever trailing over the final two days, highlighting her strategic approach throughout the match.
The 124th Women’s Amateur Championship is slated to take place at Royal Cinque Ports from June 21 to 26, 2027, promising to showcase more emerging talents in women’s golf. Fans can catch the upcoming Evian Championship from July 9-12 and the AIG Women’s Open from July 30 to August 2, both airing exclusively on Sky Sports Golf.
