Imam Alfas Federation of Yorubaland Issues Strong Disavowal of Extremism
The Imam Alfas Federation of Yorubaland has unequivocally distanced itself from any organizations or individuals whose teachings promote division, hatred, extremism, intolerance, or ideologies contrary to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. This declaration, made on Monday, reflects the federation’s longstanding commitment since its establishment in 1964 to promote a moderate interpretation of Islam across Yorubaland. The federation serves as the primary body for Islamic scholars, chief imams, alfas, and Islamic leaders in southwestern Nigeria.
Clarification of Stance on False Affiliations
In a statement shared with journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State, the federation emphasized that it does not endorse any individuals or groups that claim to represent it in ways that contradict its core values. The federation asserted that organizations or individuals failing to adhere to these values cannot legitimately speak on its behalf.
Leadership Responds to Misrepresentation
The statement was endorsed by key figures within the organization, including Sheikh Jamiu Kevulele, the Chairman and Chief Imam of Ekiti State; Sheikh Sadullah Bambora, Vice President and Chief Imam of Ogun State; Sheikh Abdulghani Agbotomokekere, Chief Imam of Oyo State; and numerous other prominent leaders. These leaders underscored that the federation takes these misrepresentations seriously and will hold accountable those who mislead the public.
Caution Against Unauthorized Representations
The league highlighted that attention has recently been directed towards individuals and groups misrepresenting themselves as affiliates or extensions of the federation. It clarified that these entities are unrecognized, and their actions do not reflect the beliefs or teachings of the federation. Any claims suggesting legitimacy on their part are deemed false and misleading, urging the public to be cautious.
Commitment to Moderation and Unity
Further elaborating on its mission, the federation stated that it has always been devoted to promoting Islamic principles centered around moderation, unity, and peaceful coexistence. It remains dedicated to sound scholarship and adherence to the teachings of the Holy Quran and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. The federation reiterated that it categorically does not support extremism or any divisive ideology, reinforcing its foundational commitment to a balanced understanding of Islam.
Call for Collaboration and Verification
The league extended a call to chief imams across all six southwestern states, traditional Muslim leaders, and various Islamic organizations to work collaboratively in maintaining authentic representations of the faith. It encouraged the Muslim community to scrutinize claims made by any self-appointed entities purporting affiliation with the federation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the officially recognized leadership structure established since 1964.
Looking Ahead with a Spirit of Unity
In closing, the Imam Alfas Federation of Yorubaland reaffirmed its commitment to promoting Islamic unity, ethical guidance, and the overall advancement of the Muslim community in Yorubaland and Nigeria. The federation called upon all stakeholders, including government and security agencies, to acknowledge its official position and to dispel any associations with unapproved entities. The league aims to foster a peaceful and harmonious society, guided by the true teachings of Islam.
