Zenith Labor Party Names Former APC Leader as Senate Candidate for FCT
The Zenith Labor Party (ZLP) has selected Professor Festus Uwakemen Ashikia, a former leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and an esteemed academic, as its candidate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate in the 2027 general elections.
During the announcement event in Abuja, party officials emphasized their commitment to legal reforms aimed at enhancing governance, alleviating multiple taxation burdens, and fortifying democratic institutions within the capital.
Dan Nwanyanwu, the ZLP’s National Chairman, expressed strong confidence in Ashikia’s ability to effectively serve FCT residents in the National Assembly, characterizing him as a politician of integrity and stature.
Nwanyanwu highlighted the party’s stability, attributing it to a strict adherence to internal democracy, constitutional mandates, and the rule of law. He indicated that the ZLP is prepared to provide a credible alternative to voters in the upcoming elections.
Ashikia’s candidacy, according to Nwanyanwu, underscores the organization’s dedication to fielding candidates equipped with the requisite skills and character necessary for public office.
The ZLP chairman cautioned against interpreting political defections as a reliable indicator of public support, asserting that electoral outcomes are determined solely by the will of the voters.
Ashikia Unveils Legislative Agenda for Governance Reform
In his subsequent address, Ashikia outlined a proactive legislative agenda designed to confront pressing governance challenges in the FCT. He pointed out that overlapping institutional responsibilities often confuse residents, leaving many unsure whether their concerns should be directed to the FCT Minister, regional councils, or their elected senators.
Acknowledging that such ambiguity hampers accountability and responsiveness, he proposed the establishment of a Senate Liaison Office to enhance communication between citizens and government agencies across the six regional councils.
Ashikia committed to sponsoring legislation that would explicitly outline the constitutional responsibilities of FCT senators and ministers, arguing that clearer definitions of roles would bolster governance and accountability.
He also addressed the issue of multiple taxation, pledging to advocate for reforms that would eliminate redundant tax obligations. He cited instances where property owners pay ground rent to both the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) and regional councils, placing an unnecessary financial burden on residents and businesses.
Addressing Democratic Integrity and Political Competition
Beyond governance, Ashikia raised concerns about factors undermining Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly ongoing legal disputes among political parties. He emphasized the importance of respecting constitutional safeguards that ensure fair political competition and participation in elections.
Reaffirming his faith in the judiciary, he stressed the necessity of maintaining public confidence in the legal system and strengthening constitutional democracy. He called for an electoral landscape where political parties can compete freely and voters can make choices based on reliable opinion polls.
Ashikia articulated a vision for a democracy that genuinely belongs to all citizens. He asserted that political parties should be allowed to engage in fair competition, candidates must undergo legitimate electoral scrutiny, and voters should make informed decisions through credible election processes.
The ZLP’s announcement of Ashikia marks the official launch of its campaign to establish a formidable presence in the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections, with a focus on governance reforms and increased institutional accountability as cornerstone policies.
