Top 50 Elite Basketball Camp Set for Lagos
DeTigers assistant captain Michael Erick’s Top 50 Elite Basketball Camp is set to take place in Lagos on July 24, organized under the Jericho Sports Legacy Foundation. This non-profit organization was established in memory of his late father, Joe Erick, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper and assistant coach, as reported by Saturday Punch.
Empowering Young Athletes
Erick, who grew up in Mushin, Lagos, unveiled details of the camp during a press conference held at the Airport Golden Tulip Hotel in Ikeja. He expressed that this initiative aims to create opportunities for young Nigerians passionate about basketball but lacking access to proper platforms.
A Passion for Youth Development
“This journey is not just mine; it’s for those who aspire to compete but face barriers,” Erick emphasized. He was inspired to launch this program after hearing numerous stories that highlighted the need for youth engagement in sports, coaching, and mentoring the next generation.
From Academia to Athletics
Although Erick did not engage in basketball during his youth, he was encouraged by his father to prioritize academics. His father, a former goalkeeper for Nigeria, represented the nation in the 1976 African Cup of Nations and later served as an assistant coach for the Super Eagles, contributing to their qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. A pivotal growth spurt and a visit to the United States encouraged Erick to shift his focus to basketball, which eventually earned him a scholarship to Temple University in Philadelphia and a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2013.
Ongoing Commitment to Training
According to Gbenga Jetawo, the foundation’s program director, this initiative has been continuously funded by Erick for five years. The camp trains both boys and girls aged 14 to 18, focusing on basketball fundamentals while fostering discipline and vital life skills unlike any other program.
Discovering Talent
The upcoming Top 50 camp aims to gather 50 young players along with their coaches from various local academies, seeking to identify exceptional talent and expose them to global standards. Participants will engage in intensive training sessions, with the foundation providing approximately 200 pairs of shoes, jerseys, and equipment. The top two or three athletes may even be offered sponsorships or trials with European clubs.
Focus on Education
Head coach Chris Nomigo, who directs the technical team for the camp, highlighted that the one-day event is designed as an engaging crash course, emphasizing skill development while ensuring an enjoyable experience. “Fun is essential; we strive to maintain an effective line of communication with the kids to maximize their opportunity for growth,” Nomigo remarked.
A Vision for the Future
Erick, who earned his degree in communication arts from Temple University in 2012, emphasized that education is a fundamental aspect of the foundation’s goals. “While basketball serves as a powerful tool for personal development, education equips individuals with the confidence and skills needed to create opportunities beyond sports,” he stated. The foundation’s long-term vision includes establishing a comprehensive academy in Nigeria with international partnerships, securing sponsorships, and consistently supporting the progress of children in their programs, helping to develop future players for the NBA.
