City officials are urgently seeking answers after federal immigration agents detained at least one individual outside a school in southeast Baltimore. Eyewitnesses captured the event on video, which some viewers may find alarming. The footage shows U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers attempting to restrain a man in the parking lot of a building temporarily housing Brigadier General John Rogers Elementary/Middle School.
WBAL-TV 11 News has reached out to ICE for a statement regarding the incident and will provide updates as information becomes available. Baltimore City Public Schools representatives have confirmed they are collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies to ascertain the details surrounding the event.
The school district issued a statement noting, “We are aware of federal immigration enforcement actions that occurred this morning on the Brigadier General John Rogers Elementary/Middle School campus. Federal officers have since departed, and the situation has been resolved. Although some members of the school community were significantly affected, uninvolved students and staff are safe, and normal school activities will proceed.” Additionally, the district emphasized its ongoing cooperation with authorities, while acknowledging that specific details are still under investigation.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed strong disapproval of such enforcement practices in the city. He stated, “This morning, I viewed footage of the troubling incident at Brigadier General John Rogers Elementary/Middle School. My team has reached out directly to the families and the city schools to offer support, as well as to federal authorities to voice our outrage regarding this arrest occurring on school grounds.” He emphasized that schools should be sanctuaries for students and their families.
In May, Mayor Scott signed the Safe Spaces and Communities Act, which underscores the need for sensitive environments like public schools to remain free from immigration enforcement activities. He reiterated, “The presence of ICE does not enhance the safety of our communities; rather, it cultivates fear and anxiety, particularly within immigrant neighborhoods. The aggressive tactics employed by federal immigration agents jeopardize both public safety and communal order.”
Scott conveyed his solidarity with immigrant families affected by detention, urging those who have experienced such an incident to reach out to the Mayor’s Office of Immigration Affairs and the Safe City Baltimore program for assistance, specifically directing individuals to call 888-214-6016. This situation will continue to be monitored, and further developments will be reported as they arise.
