Teen Advocate’s Fight Against Cancer Ends Following Family Reunion
A teenager from Chicago, who bravely battled terminal cancer while advocating for his parents’ release from U.S. immigration custody, has died shortly after reuniting with them in Mexico, according to family reports.
Eighteen-year-old Kevin Gonzalez’s parents were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in mid-April after they crossed the U.S. border from Mexico without authorization. Their intention was to visit their son in Chicago, whose health had been rapidly declining. Following their detention, Kevin traveled with relatives in Mexico, making heartfelt public appeals for family reunification during his battle with metastatic stage 4 colon cancer.
As reported by Telemundo, a federal judge authorized the release of Isidro Gonzalez Avilés, 48, and Norma Anabel Ramírez Amaya, 43, on a Thursday. By Saturday afternoon, they had returned to Kevin’s maternal grandmother’s home in Durango, Mexico.
Kevin’s brother, Giovanny Ramirez, and his aunt shared the somber news with Telemundo, confirming that Kevin passed away late Sunday afternoon.
During a poignant interview at home in Kevin’s final moments, González Avilés expressed deep remorse, kneeling at his son’s feet to seek forgiveness and to convey his unwavering love. “I don’t think he deserved the suffering he went through,” he said emotionally.
Democratic U.S. Representative Jesús “Chuy” Garcia of Chicago remarked that the Gonzalez family “should have spent more time together,” emphasizing that their experience reflects the urgent need for a more humane immigration system. Garcia, who emigrated from Durango, pledged to continue advocating for policies that honor human dignity.
Born a U.S. citizen in Chicago and raised in Mexico, Kevin received a terminal diagnosis in January, while visiting relatives. Treatment began during this time, but as his condition worsened, his parents sought permission to travel to the U.S. to be with him. However, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denied their request due to their previous undocumented status. After attempting to enter the U.S. illegally, they were arrested by ICE on April 14 and placed in detention.
This incident unfolded amid a widespread immigrant detention and deportation initiative that escalated under the Trump administration since early 2025. Medical records from the University of Chicago Medical Center revealed Kevin ultimately chose to return to Mexico to be with his family. A document dated April 28 requested a “merciful release” for one parent so they could be together in Kevin’s final days.
On May 6, Kevin appeared in a Telemundo article, calling for urgent action to secure his parents’ release. The following day, a federal district judge in Tucson, Arizona, ordered their release, allowing them to be deported quickly. They arrived in Mexico just in time to see Kevin on Saturday, one day before his passing.
Ramirez Amaya, reflecting on the difficult situation, expressed her devastation over witnessing her son’s declining health, stating, “I never imagined seeing him like this, no. I’m very sad.” The emotional toll of Kevin’s story echoes similar cases, such as that of Ofelia Torres, a 16-year-old who lost her life to cancer while fighting for her father’s release from ICE custody. These stories underscore the profound human impact of stringent immigration policies.
