Federal Agents Chase Individual Into Local Bakery
In a startling episode on Friday morning, federal immigration agents pursued a man into Ovenbird Bakery in Highlandtown, leaving local officials and staff rattled by the incident.
Incident Unfolds at Bakery
Kaylor Kyle, the bakery owner, recounted that a man entered the establishment and inquired whether the front-counter staff spoke Spanish. Shortly thereafter, he fled to the back of the bakery. Uncertainty filled the air as employees were unsure of his whereabouts, but four officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) followed him into the bakery, initiating questions directed at both staff and customers.
Confrontation Heightens Tensions
Kyle noted that the atmosphere was charged, with one agent visibly preparing for a confrontation by reaching for his firearm during the questioning. Although staff members retreated behind the counter, they did not attempt to breach any doors leading to the back or kitchen area, which was clearly designated as off-limits.
Duration and Impact of the Incident
The encounter lasted approximately five minutes before the officers departed. Kyle emphasized that the agents did not target anyone inside the bakery nor did they focus on the establishment itself.
Concerns Over Escalated Response
“Thankfully, it was a relatively quick interaction for us,” Kyle commented, expressing confusion over the level of escalation within the cafe. “They seemed to feel as if they were navigating an escalating situation where a firearm might be necessary.” He stressed that the bakery should serve as a tranquil environment for both employees and patrons.
Community Response and Support
City Councilman Mark Parker, who represents Highlandtown, visited the bakery soon after the incident to offer support to the staff. Catalina Rodríguez Lima, director of the mayor’s immigration affairs office, became aware of the situation through social media and reached out to Kyle, noting that many individuals were “afraid and concerned.” She provided resources related to Safe City Baltimore, a legal defense fund aimed at supporting immigrants.
Addressing Immigration Enforcement Concerns
Rodríguez Lima voiced ongoing concerns regarding ICE’s presence in the community, asserting, “This is an issue not just for us, but for everyone in the neighborhood.” Efforts to educate residents about their legal rights and available services are a high priority for her office, ensuring that the community is armed with essential information to protect themselves. While she could not comment on any specific increases in immigration enforcement, she acknowledged that the city might not receive reports from every area affected.

Kyle has engaged in extensive discussions with his staff since the incident and is keen to collaborate with the mayor’s office to ensure employees understand their rights when approached by federal agents. Acknowledging the heightened concerns regarding immigration enforcement in Highlandtown and its Latino population, he is actively exploring measures to safeguard his staff. “From a business standpoint, this situation is profoundly detrimental. It undermines our community and particularly affects my employees, who should not have to grapple with such distressing issues in our city,” he concluded.
