Nonprofit Launches Website to Enhance Immigration Data Transparency in Maine
A Maine nonprofit organization is taking steps to improve the accessibility and transparency of immigration data for families and local leaders. The Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition (MIRC) has unveiled a new website aimed at providing vital information about immigration enforcement in the state.
Website Development Collaborates with Local Organizations
This initiative comes in the wake of Operation Catch of the Day, a significant immigration enforcement operation that occurred in Maine. Over the past months, MIRC, along with more than 100 partner organizations, has worked tirelessly to develop a resource-rich platform. The website features key data on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities throughout Maine, including a state map that highlights locations of recent detainees. Updates are made approximately every other day, ensuring that the information remains current and relevant.
Resources for Families Facing Detention
In addition to data visualization, the website hosts an Immigration Defense Hotline, allowing individuals to report sightings of ICE agents. This resource aims to assist families in navigating the complexities of immigration enforcement when a loved one is detained.
ICE Operations Raise Concerns
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), over 200 arrests were made during a four-day operation in January 2026, as part of Operation Catch of the Day. However, only 14 of those arrested faced convictions, as highlighted by the Deportation Data Project. ICE has characterized this operation as a targeted effort against high-profile criminals.
Allegations of Targeting Vulnerable Immigrants
Despite ICE’s assertions, the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition contends that the operation disproportionately impacted immigrants of color who were attempting to establish legal residency in the U.S. Lighthouse data indicates that 94 percent of detainees from the operation were not reported concerning threat levels, raising significant questions about the motives behind the enforcement actions.
Community Reactions and Perspectives
Ruben Torres of MIRC expressed concern about the implications of Operation Catch of the Day on community trust and safety. He emphasized that the operation instilled fear rather than security among Maine’s immigrant families. “This law told Mainers to trust their neighbors, yet sent masked federal agents into neighborhoods, creating an environment of fear,” he stated.
Continued Calls for Transparency
Since the operation concluded, CBS13 has repeatedly requested DHS provide a comprehensive list of individuals arrested during the operation, but this information remains undisclosed. The response from DHS has reiterated a commitment to removing serious offenders, drawing criticism from immigrant advocacy groups.
Keiko Torres, Director of Presente! Maine, underscored the importance of making immigration data public for community safety and awareness. “Having reliable statistics is crucial to understanding the impact on our communities and the support they require,” she noted.
Ruben Torres is set to travel to Washington, D.C., this weekend to share his findings and advocate for immigrant rights with Maine’s congressional delegation.
