Jacksonville Woman Pleads Guilty to Assaulting Law Enforcement Officer
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman from Jacksonville has admitted to assaulting a law enforcement officer during a federal immigration investigation, according to an announcement by federal prosecutors on Thursday.
Potential Prison Sentence for Assault
Jennifer Susan Cruz, 41, now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison following her guilty plea for assaulting an immigration officer. U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe indicated that a sentencing date has yet to be scheduled.
Details of the Incident
Court documents reveal that the altercation took place on January 13, when federal immigration authorities collaborated with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) for a joint operation aimed at locating and arresting individuals unlawfully residing in the U.S.
Cruz’s Actions During the Operation
Authorities reported that Cruz drove by the operation site and recorded the ongoing traffic stop on her cellphone. She parked nearby and began to shout at the officers while continuing to film. It was later discovered that the two individuals inside the car being stopped were indeed undocumented immigrants.
Confrontation with Law Enforcement
When a second officer approached Cruz to express concerns about her unsafe driving and cellphone use, an argument ensued. Cruz escalated the situation by making provocative statements, questioning the officer’s stance on immigration enforcement and demanding to know if she supported “Nazis,” a reference to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
Cruz’s License Status and Subsequent Actions
A records check indicated that Cruz’s driver’s license had been suspended since June 2025. When officers requested a tow for her vehicle, Cruz attempted to leave the scene instead.
Escalation and Arrest
Multiple state troopers activated their emergency lights to box in Cruz’s vehicle. When instructed to exit and hand over her keys, she became verbally aggressive and expressed a willingness to fight. As an officer attempted to retrieve her keys, Cruz struck him in the face, prompting a physical struggle during which she resisted arrest by punching and kicking multiple officers.
Forceful Response and Injuries
As authorities attempted to transport Cruz to a patrol car, she kicked both an ICE officer and a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, injuring the ICE officer’s left hand. Despite the deployment of a Taser, Cruz continued to resist. Once secured in the patrol vehicle, she further damaged property by kicking the windows and the in-car camera system.
Joint Investigation and Prosecution
This case is part of a collaborative investigation led by the Department of Homeland Security Bureau of Investigation, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, and the Florida Highway Patrol. Assistant U.S. Attorney Arnold B. Korsmeyer is handling the prosecution of Cruz.
