Milwaukee Leaders Criticize Federal Immigration Enforcement
Recent federal immigration actions have sparked significant criticism from local leaders in Milwaukee, who are raising concerns about law enforcement practices in their communities.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Conducts Raids
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 39 individuals during a targeted operation in Wisconsin over the past weekend.
Personal Accounts of Arrests Highlight Community Impact
One of those detained, Gallo Suarez, shared at a news conference that he was arrested after leaving a grocery store in Milwaukee. He described a chaotic scene where officers, with guns drawn, forcibly broke the window of his car to apprehend him.
Local Officials Respond to Law Enforcement Practices
Suarez was ultimately released upon verification of his work permit, but his fiancée and her brother were not as fortunate, both being taken into custody despite possessing permits as well. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson condemned the actions of ICE agents, emphasizing that the use of masks during arrests contradicts local regulations.
Milwaukee’s Ordinance on Law Enforcement Conduct
This discontent aligns with a newly passed ordinance by the Milwaukee City Council, which prohibits law enforcement personnel from wearing face coverings during public interactions, save for specific exceptions. Mayor Johnson remarked on the unexpected disregard for local laws by federal agencies, stating that law enforcement should be the first to adhere to these regulations.
Department of Homeland Security’s Position
In a statement, Lauren Biss, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, asserted that the agency would not honor what it deems unconstitutional restrictions. She emphasized that federal law takes precedence and defended the use of face coverings by ICE agents for their safety and the need to shield their families from threats.
Community Concerns Over Staging Areas for Immigration Enforcement
In response to federal actions, the Milwaukee City Council also passed a resolution prohibiting the utilization of city properties for immigration enforcement purposes. Alder Marina Dimitrijevic expressed concern when she discovered that ICE agents were reportedly using the police station’s parking lot as a staging area.
Widespread Fear in the Community
Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of the immigrant rights organization Voces de la Frontera, noted a troubling trend, with her group examining 26 to 28 ICE arrests over the past week, many occurring in Milwaukee. She indicated that these detentions instill fear within the local community, asserting that “the vast majority of people have no criminal history,” contradicting DHS’s portrayal of those arrested.
