Record Attendance at Fundraiser Supports Immigrant Resource Center
On May 9, approximately 200 attendees gathered in Monrovia to celebrate a cause close to their hearts while showcasing diverse stories of support and resilience. The atmosphere was lively, underscoring a serious commitment to championing immigrant rights and services.
IRCSGV’s Commitment to Immigrants
The Immigrant Resource Center of the San Gabriel Valley (IRCSGV) is dedicated to providing essential legal support to immigrants, regardless of their financial situation. Their services encompass family reunification and assistance for victims of violence, including domestic abuse.
Successful Fundraising Efforts
Gene Grant, the center’s director of development and strategic partnerships, proudly announced that this year’s Cocktails for a Cause event raised over $25,000, setting a new fundraising record. This achievement marks a significant increase compared to last year’s contributions.
Art and Community Support
Live artwork was created by artist Ryan Birch, known as Sellout, who also contributed his pieces to the auction. The event featured talented deejays and saw the efforts of more than 40 volunteers, all of whom contributed to an engaging evening that combined fun with philanthropy.
Local Contributions Enhance the Experience
Local immigrant-owned businesses played a crucial role at the event, encouraging attendees to enjoy the evening while generously participating in auctions. Culinary offerings included tastings from Chicas on the Rocks, homemade crunchy tacos dorados, and Esfuerzo Mezcal provided by David Martinez.
Growing Community Impact Amid Challenges
The enthusiastic turnout comes as center officials brace for challenges related to immigration policies. With the impending one-year mark of the Trump administration’s stringent measures, IRCSGV has reinforced its collaborations with churches, social clubs, and other community agencies to better serve their constituents.
Personal Stories of Resilience
At the event, Cecilia Santana, an author and pastor, shared her powerful journey with the IRCSGV. After fleeing violence in her native country, she experienced further struggles in the U.S. This year, she attained legal permanent residency, which she integrates into her dual roles as both a spiritual leader and a writer.
Upcoming Training Workshops
Looking ahead, the IRCSGV will host a workshop titled “Immigrant Detention: Human Rights Violations – What We Can Do” on June 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. Participants will gain insights into the situations facing detained immigrants across the nation. Reservations can be made through a dedicated online platform. This event aims to empower attendees with practical knowledge on advocating for the rights of those in detention facilities.
