Tom Homan Addresses Immigration Enforcement and Deportation Plans
Tom Homan, former President Donald Trump’s border czar, stated that “millions” more individuals would need to be deported to restore the U.S. to a nation of lawful citizens. In a recent interview with Fox News’ Will Cain, Homan rejected claims suggesting a reduction in immigration enforcement, emphasizing his expectation for an increase in deportations.
Increased Enforcement in Sanctuary Cities
Homan highlighted the urgency surrounding immigration issues in sanctuary cities. He affirmed, “We’re going to continue to surge resources because we know there’s a problem, especially in these areas.” His remarks come as deportations are anticipated to rise, while border crossings reportedly decline.
Estimating the Number of Undocumented Immigrants
When pressed about how many more people should be deported, Homan referenced earlier estimates. “There are 12 million illegal aliens in this country. Twenty-five years ago, we used 12 million, and I believe it’s well over 20 million now,” he elaborated. He reiterated the commitment to detain as many individuals as feasible.
Commitment to Mass Deportation
On the logistical challenges of a comprehensive deportation campaign, Homan remained resolute. “We’ll just do it,” he stated, solidifying the administration’s commitment to President Trump’s promise of mass deportation. To support this initiative, his team is in the process of hiring 10,000 additional immigration officers, with 7,000 currently on board and another 3,000 in training.
Targeting Sanctuary Cities
Homan advised that he has communicated to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin about the necessity for a majority of these new employees to be deployed in sanctuary cities. His reasoning is rooted in the cooperative relationships established with law enforcement in states like Florida and Texas, which contrasts sharply with the challenges faced in states resistant to federal support.
Confrontation with New York’s Governor
In a pointed warning to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Homan pledged to “flood the zone” with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents despite potential federal resistance. This statement reflects escalating tensions over immigration enforcement strategies within the state.
Governor Hochul’s Response
In light of Hochul’s claim that unauthorized federal agents were unwelcome in New York, Homan countered, “I’m not asking either. I said it. We’re going to do it.” His assertion underscores a determination to proceed with ICE operations in the face of political opposition, declaring that obstacles will not hinder their enforcement efforts.
