Tragic Loss of Teenager Reunited with Family Amidst Battle with Cancer
A teenager struggling with terminal cancer has tragically passed away just one day after reuniting with his parents in Durango, Mexico, following their release from U.S. immigration custody.
The confirmation of Kevin Gonzalez’s death came from his aunt and brother during a broadcast with NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago late Sunday afternoon. This heartbreaking event has highlighted the challenges faced by families grappling with the complexities of immigration and medical care.
Kevin, an 18-year-old U.S. citizen, was born in Chicago but lived in Mexico with his parents, Isidro González Avilés and Norma Anabel Ramírez Amaya, who had been deported several years ago. Earlier this year, Kevin was diagnosed with colon cancer in Chicago, where he sought medical care for an ongoing stomach ailment. Unfortunately, despite aggressive treatment, the disease had progressed to his stomach and lungs, leading doctors to determine that curative options were no longer available. They recommended transitioning to palliative care in the comfort of his home.
In the wake of his diagnosis, Kevin’s parents attempted to visit him in Chicago, but were detained by ICE agents in Arizona. While they were held, Kevin returned to Mexico and was cared for by his grandmother. Just a week prior, Kevin had publicly appealed for the release of his parents so they could be by his side during his final days.
On Saturday, the emotional reunion took place, with Kevin embracing his mother in a moment fraught with love and sadness. This poignant meeting was the culmination of months of advocacy and community support aimed at reuniting the family amidst a deeply challenging situation.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, Kevin held onto hope. He spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones, grateful for the support that inspired so many. On Sunday afternoon, he passed away in the embrace of his grieving parents, reflecting on the profound impact his story had on countless individuals who rallied behind him during this difficult journey.
In an emotional interview with Noticias Telemundo, Kevin’s mother expressed her heartbreak, saying, “I never imagined that I would see my son so thin and as he is.” Meanwhile, his father, speaking through tears, shared his regrets and love for his son, emphasizing the pain Kevin endured throughout his illness.
The call for family reunification was supported by the Mexican consulate and various congressional members. A federal judge was moved by the father’s impassioned plea during a court hearing on Thursday, leading to the parents’ release on Friday, after which they began their journey back to Durango. The Department of Homeland Security revealed that Kevin’s mother had made two prior attempts to re-enter the United States but had been detained on both occasions. While their request for entry based on humanitarian grounds was denied, Kevin’s family continues to highlight the human elements at play in immigration policies.
