A teenager struggling with terminal cancer has tragically passed away just one day after reuniting with his parents in Durango, Mexico, following their release from U.S. immigration custody.
The confirmation of Kevin Gonzalez’s death came from his aunt and brother during a broadcast with NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago late Sunday afternoon. This heartbreaking event has highlighted the challenges faced by families grappling with the complexities of immigration and medical care.
Kevin, an 18-year-old U.S. citizen, was born in Chicago but lived in Mexico with his parents, Isidro González Avilés and Norma Anabel Ramírez Amaya, who had been deported several years ago. Earlier this year, Kevin was diagnosed with colon cancer in Chicago, where he sought medical care for an ongoing stomach ailment. Unfortunately, despite aggressive treatment, the disease had progressed to his stomach and lungs, leading doctors to determine that curative options were no longer available. They recommended transitioning to palliative care in the comfort of his home.
In the wake of his diagnosis, Kevin’s parents attempted to visit him in Chicago, but were detained by ICE agents in Arizona. While they were held, Kevin returned to Mexico and was cared for by his grandmother. Just a week prior, Kevin had publicly appealed for the release of his parents so they could be by his side during his final days.
On Saturday, the emotional reunion took place, with Kevin embracing his mother in a moment fraught with love and sadness. This poignant meeting was the culmination of months of advocacy and community support aimed at reuniting the family amidst a deeply challenging situation.
