Venezuelan Man Charged in Death of Florida Woman
A Venezuelan national, believed to be in the United States illegally, is facing charges for the death of an elderly woman in Florida. On May 17, 82-year-old Deborah Murphy was tragically struck in a parking lot while returning to her vehicle at a Publix in Panama City Beach.
Court documents indicate that as Murphy walked in a crosswalk, she was hit by a Toyota 4Runner driven by Carlos Suarez Contreras, 26. The impact knocked her to the ground, and the SUV continued to reverse, causing further injury, according to an arrest affidavit from the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to records, Luis Sanabria, 29, was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Both men informed authorities that they were born in Venezuela and have since been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Suarez-Contreras has entered a not guilty plea to driving with a revoked license and manslaughter, both classified as third-degree felonies. His license from Georgia had previously been revoked, reflecting a concerning trend of unlicensed drivers contributing to roadway dangers.
