Nigeria Revenue Service Unveils Taxpayer Identification System
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in partnership with the Joint Board of Revenue (JRB), has initiated the rollout of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system. This strategic move encourages individuals, businesses, and enterprises to transition to this platform, which will replace the current Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) verification API.
NRS made the announcement on X Handle on Monday, emphasizing that this initiative aims to enhance the country’s overall tax framework.
This development is part of NRS’s ongoing commitment to improve tax administration and bolster transparency in the taxation process. It follows the launch of Rev360, an integrated intelligent ecosystem designed to address taxpayer needs and unify Nigeria’s tax system since the implementation of the country’s 2025 tax reform on January 1.
Alignment with Tax Administration Act
The introduction of the Tax ID aligns with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which requires all taxable entities in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID. This regulatory framework is expected to streamline and enhance tax compliance across the board.
Benefits of the Tax ID System
The NRS pointed out that the Taxpayer ID will serve as a comprehensive identification tool for all taxpayers, facilitating seamless interactions with tax authorities at both federal and local levels. This new system aims to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate redundancy, and manage tax-related information more efficiently.
With a single taxpayer ID covering all of a company’s tax transactions, the new system simplifies compliance, making it easier for taxpayers to register, file returns, and remit taxes. Furthermore, it enhances transparency by improving the visibility and tracking of taxpayer records.
As part of its fiscal strategy, NRS believes that introducing the Tax ID will strengthen revenue security, reduce instances of tax leakage, and foster greater accountability within the tax system.
Implementation Strategy for Stakeholders
NRS has urged ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other stakeholders to begin the integration of the new Tax ID system, effectively replacing the outdated TIN validation API. This transition will streamline processes for both individuals and businesses.
Contact Points for Integration Support
Individuals and businesses looking to integrate the Tax ID system are encouraged to reach out to the Standardization and Modernization Department at JRB. Legal entities should contact the Tax Automation Department at NRS for assistance. The tax agency reiterated the importance of transitioning to the new Tax ID system for effective validation and integration services related to tax identification numbers.
For further inquiries about integration processes or validation services, all organizations currently utilizing the TIN Validation API are encouraged to get in touch with the relevant departments. Access to the Tax ID API and its associated integration guidelines is essential for a smooth transition.
